Connections #001 - It all started with a Challenge …

A few months ago, I was interviewed on Cameron Reilly’s ‘G’Day World’ show, here on the Podcast Network, on the subject of ‘Using LinkedIn as a Business Tool’.

Many listeners found the show to be very helpful to them in communicating the benefits of LinkedIn to their friends & colleagues - and it has since been picked up and re-posted on a number of other blogs and web sites.

In the interview, Cameron (a ‘LinkedIn skeptic’) set me a challenge that was a test for both my own Network and the power of Social Networking in general.

Now, as a result of successfully meeting this challenge, I’m hosting my OWN weekly show (starting with this Episode) - on how people are using Social Networking and other Web 2.0 tools & applications to gain a business benefit.

    Stan,

You and Cameron are showcasing a phrase I coined, “Social Equity” as it applies to Web 2.0 technology and social networking. Here’s a snipet from my http://www.socialFIEND.com blog post:

“Social Equity a phrase I have coined to express what people mean to people they interact with. In sociological terms social equity may bring to mind a groups struggle to gain racial equality or access to shared public resources. But in the context of social community, networking and online PR “Social Equity” as I define it is one person or brands value and relevance as perceived by a public internal/external, group, person or community. Think of equity as value and social is the community segment you influence or impact with your thoughts, actions, and marketing tactics. The stronger your sway on your public the greater your social equity in that public.”

It’s interesting to observe your application of this thoery.

Great Podcast. I’ll be tuning in from here on in. Keep up the great work guys. And please keep us posted to your findings.

    Best Regards,

    Kenneth “socialFIEND” Knapp

    Hi Stan:

Great show! Thanks for carrying the torch and keeping the “challenge” going.

Podcast demographics, driving traffic, and advertising are difficult on the web–but leveraging a tool like Linked-In may be able to really influence.

I was surprised that Linked-In in Australia is so much different than Europe or USA as far as ready acceptance for networking.

Thanks for the great tips on books and websites for learning more on how to more efficiently build a Linked In Network for business purposes.

The jury is still out on Facebook and it’s success in the social networking arena and building business relationships better than Linked-In. It is tough keeping track of too many types of social networks.

    Hi Stan,

Enjoyed the show. Ideas on how you and others are maximizing the value of business/social networking tools helps me to formulate some of my own. Keep building your network and best wishes getting to 500k connections. I look forward to future podcasts.

Thanks for an excellent podcast. I’ve subscribed via iTunes and look forward to interacting with you. In South Africa we now have about 35,000 LinkedIn members. I’ve just crossed 1,000 connections and have alread done one radio interview about it with my friend Brian Brown, who’s #2 in South Africa.

  6. Justin Lippiatt Says:

I thought the podcast was very informative, and look forward to listening to more in the future. As a recently landed South African in Melbourne, I was looking to establish a network. I have been LinkedIn for quite some time and have never used the tool. I have already seen the benefits of LinkedIn and I look forward to expanding and getting connected. The podcast is an awesome medium to personalise the network and to contextualise the core of networking - relationship building.

Thanks Stan your guidance was on the money!
